Sophie Kauer

Sophie (2001) is a German-British cellist who is described by Herbert Music as a performer who is “leading the way in developing classical music”. She studied at the Junior Royal Academy of Music, where she is now an Associate (ARAM). From the age of 13 to 18 she also took private lessons with renowned teacher Melissa Phelps, and is currently studying with Torleif Thedeén at the Norwegian Academy of Music.

In addition to being an exellent cellist, Sophie also had a prominent acting role in the film TÁR (2022) with Cate Blanchett. Composer John Williams described her performance in it as "an extraordinary actress and an outstanding musician".

Sophie debuted with the EP "Unsung" in 2023 on Deutsche Grammophon, which led her to become the youngest artist to reach number one on the "Classical On-Demand Audio Streaming Chart". She has been named a Classic FM "Rising Star" and has been nominated for the Opus Klassik Awards.

Sophie has performed as a soloist with a number of renowned orchestras such as the Deutsches Symphonie Orchester, the London Symphony Orchestra, the Dresden Philharmonie and the Gewandhaus Orchester. In addition to being an extraordinary cellist and actress, Sophie is passionate about promoting female composers. She has commissioned and performed new works by Eunike Tanzil, Anna Berg and Missy Mazzoli, among others. Her passion for supporting underrepresented voices in classical music is also evident on her EP "Ungsung".

"As both a cellist and an actor, I am passionate about storytelling. I am passionate about creating meaningful experiences that resonate with audiences, whether on stage, record or film."

Sophie currently plays a cello built by Thomas Meuwissen, generously loaned by Dextra Musica.
